The Hourglass Shape: Buckle Up, Curves Ahead!
Continuing my Body Shape series, our next silhouette is… The Hourglass!!
So what is the hourglass silhouette? Well, your hip measurement is equal to your bust measurement and there is a 10inch difference between those 2 numbers and your waistline. For example, it would read something like 42”-32”-42”.
The hourglass shape is the shape with the most natural balance, so... unlike the other shapes where we style to increase/minimize volume on the top and/or bottom to balance out a look, this shape is already IN balance, so we just have to work with its natural curves.
High Waisted jeans are your best friend: While all silhouettes of jeans will look great on you: you can really pull off a flared or wide-legged jean.
Pass on the voluminous skirt. Since you have the curves on top and bottom, you don’t want to add any volume that will bring that out of balance and overwhelm your silhouette.
A skinny belt is another best friend:To highlight your small waistline, add a skinny belt around your dress or a high waistband. J Crew and Boden have fantastic selections.
Choose jackets that hit your hip line, so as to not “lose” your waistline.
Go for a jacket that has tailored seams structured s into the waistline.
Pick fabrics with a silky feel and aren’t structured or stiff. If they’re stiff, it won’t flow well from the bust line and will add unwanted volume and a blocky look.
Wrap tops will flow with your curves so embrace them!
A V-neck will highlight your balanced figure and small waistline.
Sheath and wrap dresses will be winning looks for you!
Avoid creating a boxy silhouette- that means no cocoon jackets, shift dresses or baby-doll tops!
