Go With the Flow: The Travel Trench

Ciao! As I’m writing this, I am wrapping up my Italian tour of churches, fine art and unforgettable cuisine (and picking up some new recipes and methods of cooking).

As a personal stylist, one might reasonably assume that I love purses, accessories, makeup, and the like but in truth, although I do enjoy some flair to my outfits, what I really value is a Look that’s practical, comfortable and decidedly UN-fussy.

Let me introduce you to one of those major game changers: the travel trench coat.

The travel trench is the ultimate in making your travel flow with a bit more ease. It’s durable, flexes for different weather, is appropriate for a multitude of occasions, and covers yourself appropriately.

This latest trip was actually the first time I’ve packed a trench coat and it will not be the last. Let’s run through a few of the benefits.

  1. Versatility: Can you think of another coat that can so easily be thrown over a black dress for the opera, then days later, work for a stadium seat at a rugby match? (This is what initially inspired me to choose the trench). The fact that it works over a nice dress as efficiently as with a simple pair of jeans, t-shirt and sneakers, is exactly why you need this for a trip.

  2. Temperature/Weather Protection: Another benefit I loved about it is temperature regulation. Depending on the day or time of day, all I had to do was switch up my layers. A thin cashmere sweater and turtleneck will layer perfectly underneath. It wasn’t about having a bulky coat to keep me warm as it was about nice layers in good natural fabrics that did the trick. (Plus wool hiking socks but that’s for another week!).

  3. Large Pockets: One of my favorite attributes. The specific trench I have has large, ZIPPERED pockets… which means, no purse! I kept everything I needed close to my body, with no chance of it getting ripped or unzipped in a crowd. I also love the lighter construction, which is especially welcome when you’re walking 7seven miles a day!

  4. Durability: Another thing that makes a trench perfect for long trips is durability. Between the trains, the airline seats, eating meals, drinking coffee… if you’re anything like me, then you’re bound to get some food and grime on your coat, and that’s where a trench coat soars because it’s water resistant. So that oops-moment easily glides off and you don’t have to worry about a big coffee stain.

  5. Classic: Last but not least is how the trench is timeless. Anywhere you go, it will likely be very appropriate style-wise.

Et voila! Now let’s get to shopping.

Question: What brand of trench do YOU like to wear?
