From Drab to Fab: Styling Principles
As we enter into the crispness of October, we can have a LOT of fun with styling. Before you think, “ughhhh I can’t even put just a basic outfit together” or “but I don’t have any good pieces” - stop right there! It’s actually very simple.
The best part of adding the ‘personal’ to ‘personal style’, is that with a creative and stylistic eye – you can reinvent what’s already in your closet!
Especially if you are one to have very classic pieces, you very well likely can have the most fun with making them feel fresh. Polo Ralph Lauren does an amazing job at this and is worth taking a study. Simple, timeless, good quality pieces can be styled to suit your body type and personality.
For instance, take a look at this striped button down. If you were to pass it strolling Nordstrom’s, what would you think?
However, when adding the “styling” it can really shift vibes on what might have been first impression.
The rolled sleeve, the casual jean with braided Americana belt, the warmth of the camel and the artistic modern earring all play a part!
Now if we had to break down how to accomplish this, it’s basically 3 easy steps.
Contrast: Contrast is key in styling! If a piece feels too masculine, add some feminine details. If, for instance, you’re wearing denim, add something smoother, like a silk blouse or some pink tones to give it a softer feel.
Personal aesthetic: What are the key elements that feel very ‘you’? You know - that thing you put on and just relax and feel, “Ah, this is me.” It could be a cowgirl boot, headband, collarless jacket, or button-down blouse (to name a few). Know these key pieces you can always toss one on with a classic.
Keep your wardrobe to a minimum: The more you have, the harder it is to know what you really enjoy wearing. I promise you - I PROMISE you - that you will be more creative when you have less!
Et voila! I hope you have oodles of fun trying out these three simple tips.
