“Ask Meghan”: Light Wash Jeans with Darker Tops
With the warmer weather slooooooowly getting closer to the cooler evenings (dare I say, Fall is coming??? Soon???!! Please?!!), I thought we’d focus on a fabulous question someone wrote to me about:
How to pair your lighter wash jean with darker tops.
Pairing lighter wash jeans (a casual Summer look) with darker tops (a crisper Fall statement) is a great way to transition your waning days of Summer wardrobe into a proper Autumn look..
It can be an awkward time in your closet, playing the guessing game of when will you finally be able to whip out your sweaters and plaids and store your white linen dresses and sandals away?
Lighter wash denim is a piece of cake to style during the Fall, or as the French say “C’est du gateau.” You can pop it on with an airy white blouse and mule and you are good-to-go!
But before you store these jeans away, let’s learn how to style them with darker tops during this seasonal transition.
It can be difficult to pair lighter wash jeans with items that aren’t light and summery. Because light wash denim has a more relaxed feel, sometimes when we pair it with a darker color, it just feels “blah and maybe a bit androgynous… a bit too rugged.” And for that, I have two tricks that will ease this conundrum for you: Contrast and elevate
Pair a light wash jeans with silky, feminine textures to offset any ruggedness. For example, try a silky black blouse or a shimmery navy blouse. Don’t be afraid to lean into the sparkle and shine! It won’t be “too much” because you are contrasting it with a very relaxed jean. It will all balance out!
The second way to make this work is by adding sophisticated, chic tailoring. For instance, a tailored, sleek navy blazer can balance out the more relaxed, easygoing look of a lighter jean.
Here are a few examples to provide a little inspiration for you!
