Closet Archeology: Simple Ways to Dig Deep & Hone Your Style

“Gosh, I have so enjoyed this and feel like you have helped me sooo much. I feel like you have helped me get my confidence back at a time I really needed it. I also feel like a gained a really cool, fashionable frien (53).png

Are you ever been surprised by what you unearth in your closet? When was the last time you dug something out, from between two smooshed hangers and thought, “Wow I totally forgot about this!”

It’s easy to lose track of what’s in your closet. Which just goes to show how memorable some pieces are… and how others need to go  on the donations pile!

But today, we’re going to focus on a fun and simple little exercise that you can do to help you understand your own style better.

I had this revelation the other day, regarding a pair of my favorite shorts that I've had for nearly 10 years. And trust me, I’ve been through a LOT of style changes with these puppies, and they’ve had their opportunity to be sent to the donation bin, too.

Back in, oh….. 2011, I bought a pair of high-waisted, trouser-like, silk printed shorts with a contrasting waist, that I found on the sale rack at Anthropologie. They have served me SO WELL. And for someone who is an absolute mess while I’m cooking, eating, drinking… I am in near shock that these dry clean only shorts have withstood my messiness. And I believe they have survived, thanks to the fact that I am subconsciously more careful when I wear them because I don’t want them ruined! Anyway, these shorts are a hit for me EVERY single Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Do you have an item like this in your closet? Something you’ve had for years and if you lost it and had the chance to buy it again… you would?? Perhaps for even double the price?!

If you do have a piece like this - you can use it to understand your style better. It will help you regret future ‘impulse’ purchases. All you have to do is ask yourself a few questions and send yourself the answers in an email before you go shopping.

So, grab that winning garment you’ve had for years and ask yourself:

  1. What is the cut of this garment and why do I like it?

  2. What does this garment highlight?

  3. What does this garment disguise?

  4. Why do I enjoy the fabric so much?

  5. Why do I like the print/color so much?

  6. What are other items I pair this with?

  7. Where do I wear this item?

Asking questions like these will lead you to more intentional purchases that will serve you -- and your closet -- well. It’s also a little insight into what it feels like to be one of my clients. So if you need help or guidance before stepping back and answering these questions objectively, just send me an email! But if it’s as fun a project for you as I find it is for me, then dive in and please keep me posted on your progress!

Little wardrobe exercises like this will put you on the fast track to a revamped closet!

Next week, I have a VERY EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT to make.  If you’re liking posts like this then you’ll understand why I’m absolutely giddy with joy to share some new good news very soon!
