The Banana Shape: Relax, You Can’t Slip Up!
This week we’re back with our Body Shape Series! And today, we’ll be covering a common silhouette... the Banana.
The banana can be one of the easier silhouettes to style (lucky you) because you have more “do’s” than “don’ts” in your style choices
It’s also common that, at one point in your life, you may shift into a banana shape. Ifyou’’re a strawberry or pear shape, and lose or gain weight, you can turn into a banana. So, even if you’re not a banana today, it’s still important to read up on its silhouette tips so... at that one point in your life when you’re a banana, you won’t slip up and you’ll be set to style yourself with confidence.
Now, let’s get to our 10 Styling Tips for Bananas.
A belted waistline is your new best friend. Boden and J Crew have fantastic options. You can wrap a belt around your dresses or blouses to fool the eye into the illusion of a smaller waist.
Go for that fun voluminous skirt! Because you are equally proportioned on the top and bottom, you can have a little fun with exaggerated volumes.
That means you can also wear oh-so-chic puffed sleeves. (Just be sure to pair such a top with slim pants and/or pencil skirt, so as not to be too puffy).
Jeans: Out of all body shapes, jeans look the greatest on you! Go for a high waist, so as to avoid a “boxy” shape from a low- or mid-rise. Skinnies and straight jeans look great on you too but if you want to add a little feminine curve, go for a flare at the cuff.
You own the loose, flowy high-waisted trousers look. The flow of the pant will give you a feminine feel to wearing pants. Because your frame is balanced, it will have a graceful look.
Dress Silhouette: Rock a fit-n-flare! A-lines will be lovely. With a sheath you’ll have to be careful not to look too “boxy” but the right colorblock (and popping on a jacket that hits at the hip) can help with this.
Wrap tops are your jam (but when are they not?!). This will create really feminine lines down your torso.
Choose bolero-type jackets that crop the waist and elegantly bisect your body. This is not to say that a longer jacket/blazer won’t look good too.
For a go-to coat, try a belted trench to add shape/curve (plus, it’s a timeless coat that you’ll have for years!)
Since bananas often have a smaller bust, go for necklines like a boat neck or crew to draw the eye upward from ‘the girls.’
Now let’s shop! Here are some picks I’ve peeled for all my bananas out there!
