Jeans: A big game-changing moment

When I was a junior in high school I remember reading the most COMICAL article on fashion. And I so WISH I had it to this day, but unfortunately, I do not. Shared from the writer’s point of view, it’s an amusing account of a mother and daughter trying skinny jeans on for the first time.

They were in the dressing room enduring a series of mishaps together from banging into the dressing room door while trying to wriggle into a pair, to figuring out how to squeeze their thighs and ankles through the sausage-tight fabric.

Think back to  the glory of 2005-2006. Yes, ruffled mini skirts, headbands, and tight cotton-jersey cap sleeve tees were all the rage (thank you, Paris Hilton). And most of all... SKINNY jeans made their debut

Let me repeat that… SKINNY JEANS have been “IN” since 2005.

As baffling as it seems, since most trends drift in and out after a few short years (or months) skinny jeans have endured and folks…  it is 15 years later!!

For all my adult life, I have had my legs suctioned into sausage-casing pants. On the Fashionological time scale (ok, I just made that word up) that means I -- a 31 year old married woman -- have been wearing skinnies since I was a 16 year old with a driver’s permit. Skinny jeans have been with me through the thick and thin (on more than just the metaphorical level, IFFFF you know what I mean… LOL).

Fast forward to late 2018 and you may have noticed -- like I did -- a lot of cropped flare jeans. You may recall the article I wrote just this summer while I was in Paris, on how I hardly saw ANY skinny jeans.

So, I decided to give the wide leg and cropped flared styles a try.

AND LET ME TELL YOU...

Not only are they MUCH more flattering on my straight frame’s wide hips, but…

My husband and I were going for a walk Friday evening and I kept jubilantly exclaimingMy legs! My legs! I can move and feel my legs!!

I have been soooooooo zeroed in on skinny jeans for the past 15 years. Every once in awhile, it’s good to try something fresh and new. Perhaps you think it won’t be flattering, but if a big chunk of time (like, a decade plus) has gone by since you’ve freshened up your ‘jeans look,’ maybe it’s time to revisit how skinnies look, feel, and say YOU.

While skinny jeans still are in and are GREAT foundational pieces for just about any wardrobe (don’t worry, you can keep the ones you just ripped the tags from) it’s good to round out your ‘denim ensemble’ with some other styles.

I particularly recommend the cropped flared for a casual look and a high waisted wide leg for a more feminine and elegant look.

Below, I’ve listed u a few great brands and different cuts (and some wonderful deals), to save you time  hunting. If you do decide to shop on your own, you can reference this article as a guide to different brand fits.
