Special Occasions: Don’t Settle, Celebrate!
It’s May – the month of high school and college graduations, weddings, First Communions, baptisms, and so many many more special events worth celebrating.
I know, it can feel a little stressful when we get a last-minute invitation to an important event only to feel like there is NOTHING to wear! And does it sound all too familiar to put off shopping for something until the last minute, only to dash to Nordstrom’s in hopes of finding something, only to end up buying an outfit out of necessity and not because it’s a great addition to our wardrobe?
These situations happen all the time, not just in May. So it helps to keep a couple of classic dresses that you can pull out in a pinch. The last thing you need at this happy, celebratory moment is wondering… what do I wear?!
Let’s focus on what matters and handle “what to wear” right now!
Here are a few of my best pointers for finding that special event dress:
What kind of occasions in the next couple years are you most likely to attend? If you have high schoolers or college-age students that will mean graduations. If you're more mature, perhaps it’s funerals. Or are you in the age range where people are getting married? Then (obviously) weddings are on your social calendar! Just think a little about the kinds of events you should be planning for in the near future.
Go for something classic that can sustain you (and trends) for a few years. If you feel the itch or inspiration to buy something more trendy - you have that option! But right now, let’s pull together a few great basics that will flatter and serve you well.
What are your shoe options? If you’re not a heels person, then choose a hemline that hits the top of your knee. If you do love heels, then consider a longer hemline.
Think about the weather. Will your dress need a layering piece? Then perhaps forego the puffed sleeve. If you’ll be wearing it in warmer weather than avoid heavier fabrics. It’s all about forecasting where and when you’ll be wearing this piece.
What are your accessories? The great advantage to a classic dress is that you can make it feel different with fun accessories. Make sure the dress you pick works well with the accessories you already own.
