Basics of Personal Styling: 3 Easy Tips

Just the other day, as I was shopping for some of my Club members, I ran across a dress. This. Dress. Looked. Incredible. While it was a pretty basic, classic cut that could look great on most people - something else really stood out to me.

STYLING is everything.

How you pair a dress - from the shoes, to the jacket, to the accessories – this is what really makes a Look come together.

And the best part is that you can have quite a compact wardrobe and make it work. It’s really about knowing the styling “tricks” that will make it all come together.

So… THIS is the dress I found.

Ralph Lauren

Now just imagine it without the boots, the belt, the jacket, the light, natural makeup. It would be a completely different look, would it not?!

That’s what made me realize the importance of seeing– with a creative and stylistic eye – what you already have in your closet! Now if we had to break down how to accomplish this, I recommend starting with three easy ways to approach what you already have and make it feel fresh and “you”.

  1. Contrast: Contrast is key in styling! If a piece feels too masculine, add some feminine details. If, for instance, you’re wearing denim, add something smoother, like a silk blouse or some pink tones to give it a softer feel.

  2. Personal aesthetic: What are the key elements that feel very ‘you’? You know - that thing you put on and just relax and feel, “Ah, this is me.” It could be a cowgirl boot, headband, collarless jacket, or button-down blouse (to name a few). Know these key pieces you can always toss one on with a classic.

  3. Keep your wardrobe to a minimum: The more you have, the harder it is to know what you really enjoy wearing. I promise you - I PROMISE you - that you will be more creative when you have less!

Et voila! I hope you have oodles of fun trying out these three simple tips. With Fall just a few weeks away, now is the perfect time to prep (you should also try this closet cleanse or this one) and try it out!

Question: What is YOUR number one styling trick?!
