Summer Outdoors: The Athletic Skort

It’s officially Summer!! I’m sure that many of you are diving into fun outdoor activities - going to the water, hiking, and spending time outdoors.

Which begs the question… What to wear while doing activities outside?

Pants, capris, shorts are all fine options but… If you feel you want a little more feminine zest to your outdoor athletic wear, I’ve got an option for you.

Now the thing is, in reality, it’s pretty rare that you will ever just wear your workout stuff and then come immediately home to shower and change again. Chances are more likely that your schedule is going to go nonstop into having to pick up your kids, go to the playground, run to the grocery store, maybe dip into Nordstrom Rack (hehe!), etc. We get it and that’s life!

So… why not jazz up your outdoor wear with a little splash of feminine style?

Introducing… the athletic skort!

Now, I’ve been working out in skorts for awhile and I also have a lot of clients that use them for outdoor wear as well - and they love them!

Here’s a big statement: Not only are they stylish but they are more comfortable than Spandex- or Lycra-based athletic shorts (think, chafing and sweat in the thigh area - it’s the truth so I had to say it), AND you also get more coverage than with typical shorts, especially if you’ll be doing more extreme movements (think workout moves/stretching at the gym or rock climbing).

Crazy, right?! Don’t be fooled thinking it’s all about the looks here! (Although, they are more fun to wear, in my opinion).

While there’s been a canicule (heat wave) here in the Alps where my husband and I have been staying, we’ve still been able to hike because he’s invented something to keep you cool and dry (which is amazing and it’s crazy how well it works!). So we’ve been doing a lot more hiking and I’ve been wearing a LOT more skirts than I ever have for summer in France before! From hiking the Bordeaux wine region of Saint Emilion to the amaaaaaaazing Dentelles in Provence, France, it’s been quite exciting and have been very happy with the athletic skort I brought.

Here are a few ways to style your skort on the ‘outdoorsy’ days:

  1. Go monochromatic - this will create a sleek look that lengthens your frame. Simple is better!

  2. Elegant in white - a white skort exudes polish and timeless class.

  3. After your activity, toss over a sweater (especially if you’re going into the AC, you will need this!). Whether it’s a chunky knit or a half zip pullover, it adds a little bit of prep and polish to your look.

  4. Swap into a little white sneaker so you don’t have to wear workout shoes the whole time (this is perfect if you have an after-activity errand).

  5. Keep it simple - the skort is adaptle enough on it’s own, so go cool and calm with color and style (i.e., skip the graphic printed shirts or loud shoes).
