The Power of the Miraculous Medal (and where to buy one)
This week last year, Brice and I were in France (ooh la la for the days of pre-coronavirus travel!!!)
During our stop in Paris, of course we had to make a visit to Rue de Bac. If you’ve been reading my blog for the past year, you will recall how I was pleasantly surprised when one of the sweet nuns handed out modesty skirts! (Had I been a teenager though, I know I would have been morbidly embarrassed!)
This is the convent/chapel where we have not just one, but TWO saints (St. Louise de Marillac and St. Catherine Laboure) AND as if that is not enough, the Blessed Mother gave the Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine Laboure in its chapel (have you read the post on the power of the Miraculous Medal?). The chair that Our Blessed Mother sat in is STILL there!
If you’re not familiar with this miraculous medal, it was given to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830, after the Reign of Terror in France… all in the name of “freedom.”
One day during that awful Reign, (November 27), our Mother Mary appeared to Sister Catherine in a high-neck, long-sleeved silk dress that was the color of the dawn and wearing a white veil.
The second time Mary appeared to Catherine she appeared in an oval frame, standing on a globe, with rays of light shining from her hands while encircling the frame were the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” She asked Catherine to tell her confessor to press this image into a medal.
Mary promised that, whoever wears the medal, will receive great graces.
By the time St. Catherine passed away, billions of miraculous medals had spread throughout the world, followed by conversions and miracles. And get this… during her life, NO ONE but her confessor knew that she was the nun that our Holy Mother Mary had given the medal to. (Talk about humility! C’est incredible!!).
Because it’s easy to forget the power of these Sacramentals, I thought we’d take this week to highlight the miraculous medal. There are some wonderful small Catholic businesses who sell artful variations of these medals.
Here below you will find some of my favorite suggestions and they make perfect gifts for graduations, baptisms, First Communions, weddings, birthdays, or… “just because.”
Hope you enjoy these Catholic shops as much as I do!
