Suiting Up: Packing 4.0

Bon Voyage! I think it’s time we talk about one of the hottest topics… packing!

Packing can be so stressful, it becomes the last thing you want to think about. Maybe it’s the weight issue of your bag (What if I’m over?) or it’s deciding if you’re checking in or not.

You may recall, the first time I traveled abroad, I definitely overpacked. But… after many trips to and from France, and living in France, I feel like each time for me gets a little bit more… harmonic.

Fall is a beautiful time to travel and to make pilgrimages. So, as I was packing for my own trip back to France, I thought of a few key points that I wanted to share that might make packing a little bit less stressful for you, too, and a little more fun!

Let’s break it down:

  1. Wear your bulkiest item on the plane: This can really work to your advantage since, on a long plane ride, you’ll wind up freezing since you’re not moving. I like to wear my bulkiest sweater, a pair of pants/jeans and (once we’re in the air) I sneak on a pair of comfy toe socks!

  2. Packable jackets: Packing-wise, this is a lifesaver. Honestly, you can get a perfectly fine one from Costco (this one literally rolls up into a super tiny ball). This is great for when you’re in the hotel, going for a quick morning walk. But if it’s Fall or Winter you’ll definitely want to bring, of course, your nicer warmer coat, too.

  3. Natural fabrics: If you have to rewear your tops, I HIGHLY recommend natural fabrics. They not only work better, acclimating to changes in  temperature but also (let’s be honest) they handle odors better, too.

  4. Cohesive with color: You really don’t have to get fancy, just go natural with cream, blue, black, camel.

  5. Work around your shoes: Which shoe will you wear? This will determine skirt/dress and jean/pant length.

  6. Nail down one Mass outfit: This can also work as an outfit if you’re going to a fancy dinner, opera, symphony, etc.

  7. Use the EBag and Crossbody phone case: I can’t describe how much room this saves (because I’m saving that for a future blog post - stay tuned)!

Et voila! I’d love to hear YOUR best packing tips below in the comments!
