Stay Warm, Look Cool: Fall Hats

It is the beautiful month of October and a glorious one it is! I got the chance to leave the desert for a few days and enjoy the colorful foliage up north.

One of the most fun and crucial parts of a Fall wardrobe… the hat!!

Many of my clients have a difficult time “accepting” wearing a hat, saying it feels like ‘too much’ or it’s just ‘too noticeable.’

If you have also felt this way, I have two solutions for what may really be the problem (and one… you may not like!).

First, you just haven’t found the right hat - and that’s what I’m here for! We will find it and when we do, you’ll want to do a little giddy dance of happiness while getting dressed.

My second piece of advice is… stop caring too much about your appearance! Don’t take yourself too seriously. It doesn’t look as bad as you think and actually… it really might look quite amazing! Relax, these days there’s no need to get over critical with yourself.

Now, as to finding the RIGHT hat? Let’s get started!

So how DO you pick the hat that’s right for you? Here are my pointers:

  1. Go to your nearest department store (you know how I love me some Nordstrom’s) and try on ALL the styles they have Then go look in the mirror and you just may surprise yourself with how flattering one style looks over another (that’s okay, I’ve found that people often do surprise themselves).

  2. Peruse Pinterest. What’s popping out at you? Perhaps you see a style that appeals to you, but then you try to talk yourself out of it with, “I could never wear that…”. Rubbish!! Pin it, then try it!

  3. Online shop! You can get the best result trying things on in the comfort of your own home. The pressure of stores and that awful overhead halogen lighting can be too much sometimes. Try them on, at your own convenience, in your own personally peaceful setting.

  4. Think about what will compliment your wardrobe. If you feel you have more masculine clothes, try going for a sweet beret with an embellishment. If you wear a lot of dresses, a more fedora-like, brimmed hat could be the perfect pairing.

  5. Don’t make any big investments in the first year. It’s important to really feel out different styles, through different seasons, before you decide on one (or more!) that you will want to own and wear for years and years. Start by finding a sweet beret or fun fedora for under $20 while you try out new hats and how they look.

And now, it’s time to shop!!

If this kind of shopping mission feels more like a dilemma than a fun adventure, relax - you will most definitely benefit from my Style Club.
