Pentecost and Wearing RED

This weekend, June 8-9, is the birthday of the Catholic Church. Where we, the body, are summoned to make disciples of the world. The whole world.

BOOM.

Can you imagine being in the room with the Disciples… and a flame from Heaven suddenly shoots down and splits over the top of everyone’s heads?! Can you imagine how jazzed it must have made them feel? I think the feeling must have been indescribable (and  surely the kick in the keister the Disciples needed)!

Anyways, on this truly AWESOME day, the Church wears RED to express the zeal and fire the Holy Spirit lights within us all

Now, it’s not that we wear red and there’s some magical difference or that it instantly makes us holy. No, no, noooooo.

It’s when we’re getting dressed in the morning, and we’re so excited, that we EXPRESS our joy and zeal, and our gratitude towards the Holy Spirit by a simple nod and little prayer, and using the physical to try and express the divine.

This would be a great time to chat about the best ways to wear red! Obviously!

When wearing red, there are TWO key questions:

  1. Am I a cool red or a warm red?

  2. Can my personality keep up with a bright bold red? Or should I choose to wear red in small doses in strategically styled places?

What is a “warm red” vs. a “cool red”... and why  does it matter?

A warm red has yellow or amber (ie, “warm”) undertones in it. These reds will look more on the orange/coral side.

A cool red has blue undertones in it. Such reds  will look more magenta or rose.

(For those who want to geek out over the science of tones and tints, this will be helpful.)

So, which one is for you?

If you identify as having a warmer skin tone, you’ll want to go with yellow- reds. If you have a cooler skin tone, you’ll want to go with blue-reds. And... If you read my article here on  skintone & colors, you’ll learn how some of you lucky ducks are neutral and can wear BOTH.

Below are some fun options and inspirations for you to consider wearing this Pentecost Sunday.

Chelsea 28 Ruffle Wrap Dress Such a flattering cut! Perfect for mass with wedges or nude loafers, yet after mass for brunch, just slip on some sandals and a denim jacket!

Hinge Smock Top What a fun print!

Boden Shirt Red Pop Talk about POP! This is sure to put some pep in your step if you didn’t finish your coffee before the communion fast!

Boden Richmond Pant If a red pant is too intimidating for you… perhaps, “too much”, you’ll want to soften it with subdued pieces like a beige loafer or a denim button down.

I hope these ways to wear red ignite your summer style! And Happy Birthday, Catholic Church!
