Fashion “rules” we’re all ready to break
I love talking with other Catholic women and our conversations often turn to the “rules” of style. Rules that make us feel like getting dressed is going to be an either/or exercise between what we “can” and what we “cannot” wear.
Hey, it’s understandable. I get it. So, in order not to “break” these sacred (!!) fashion “rules,” we let ourselves slide into comfortable (but not very creative) choices and tell ourselves that we’re happy wearing something familiar.
Something “safe.”
We let the Commandments of Fashion and trends regulate what is considered “in…. or out…” curb our enthusiasm for our own closets.
Perhaps you’ve gone into a dressing room to try on a cropped jean with an ankle bootie and suddenly, you imagine yourself on the set of Project Runway with Heidi Klum staring at you and admonishing,“You’re either in or you’re out!”....
GAHH…!!! The pressure!!!
So you take off those fun jeans and booties and change back in to what you’re familiar with…. What you ALWAYS wear.
WIth that kind of guilt-tripping playing inside your head, it can be hard to muster the courage to experiment with your style. It’s like walking into what you thought was going to be a costume party only no one else is dressed up… and everyone else is staring at YOU thinking “oh… my… gosh….”
The truth is, no one cares THAT much (and most of them probably wouldn’t even notice).
It’s sooooo worth it (for YOU) to push your style forward. Even if it’s just an itty-bitty bit at first. Because what you put together might just be even more fun and amazing! The risk (trust me) is very small. Don’t let your imagination blow the simple act of getting dressed out of proportion.
The First Commandment of fashion is (or it should be): Thou Shalt Break the Rules.
Relax and don’t take yourself too seriously when delving into your personal style. Remember it’s just clothes! Go with a light hearted attitude! Trying your best, in style and life, is a true blessing!
You can’t relax into naturally finding your style if you’re feeling suffocated by false rules.
So let’s smash a few of those “sacred cows” right now, and prove how rules -- probably once set up as “guidelines” -- have become twisted into making people feel unfashionable if they do not oblige.
Let’s go!!
You should never mix navy and black… FALSE
2. Tall women should not wear heels… FALSE!
3. Sparkles are only for the evening… FALSE!
4. You can’t wear white after Labor Day... FALSE!
I hope that,by breaking a few of these style “Commandments” you will start to feel more confident and curious about taking some fashion risks and discovering your personal style!
